Collins Radio Rare 75S-3A Receiver RESTORED
Collins Radio Rare 75S-3A Receiver – RESTORED. 75S-3A is the best receiver in the Collins Radio S-Line series. Please read the comments below expanding on this subject. The 75S-3A has one of the best Collins Radio CW filters ever make. Filter has a very flat passband and no ringing. Also included is the Collins 2.1KHz. The T4 modification has been implemented in this radio more on this below. This radio has just been through a complete restoration. The restoration has been done professionally. The restoration documentation is detailed and will be supplied to the new owner. Marginal components have been replaced, tubes tested and replaced as required, and an all band full alignment completed. The restoration parts and labor are guaranteed. This was not a cheap effort it was done to restore a rare Collins Radio 75S-3A. It is estimated that less than 500 units were manufactured and maybe 60 to 100 still exist. The cosmetics of the radio are excellent. The Collins Collectors Association has a well-defined radio condition grading system. This rare 75S-3A now meets the grade of EXCELLENT. The differences between the 75S-3A and 75S-3C are subtle as are the differences between the 75S-3 and 75S-3B. Some people attribute this to the fact that there is more shielding in the 75S-3 / 75S-3A than in the 75S-3B / 75S-3C. The AVC / AGC action is slightly different between the receiver groups with the majority of people favoring the earlier receivers. On the surface, how the receivers operate is pretty similar. However, when one uses examples of both groups, the subtle differences become apparent and, again, the majority tend to prefer the earlier examples. Another thing is that the 75S-3B / 75S-3C were generally manufactured after the bean counters got involved with the intention of cutting production costs to improve the profitability of the units. Generally, such activity does not improve the performance of a product and often has an opposite effect. The T-4 modification, which is described in Service Bulletin 2 for the 75S-3B / 75S-3C is actually applicable to the earlier 75S- series receivers. According to the article in The Signal magazine in the Q1 2016 Issue #81, this modification improves the 3. Order dynamic range by an average of 20 dB! In addition, the modification greatly improves the front end selectivity. The total gain, in the receiver, is reduced by an average of 3 dB which does affect the S meter making it more Scotch. However, the MDS / LDS (minimum discernible signal / least discernible signal) are still excellent. In fact, the ambient noise level on all HF bands is considerably higher than the sensitivity of the receiver and, as such, is the limiting factor in how weak an actual signal can be received.
