This is a Kenwood model # TS-440S/AT HF-bands Base Station/Mobile Ham Radio Transceiver, from a local Amateur Radio operator’s Estate. This is an HF bands (160 through 10-Meters) Transceiver, with digital frequency readout. It has dual VFOs, General-Coverage Receiver (0.15 to 30 MHz,) frequency memories, etc. That you’d expect to find in a modern HF Transceiver. It appears to be in good physical condition, and comes with the optional Narrow CW and SSB Filters. The only testing I performed was to connect this TS-440SAT radio to an Kenwood PS-50 AC Power Supply, which is shown providing power for the first few pictures. I have only an 80-Meter Inverted Vee antenna to use for tests, and I transmitted using SSB and listened on an ICOM HF Transceiver. I checked the transmit power output on SSB, then using the FM mode to obtain a steady carrier, and my Drake W-4 Wattmeter indicated nearly 100-watts output. Transmit performance appears to be good, and the transmit audio received on my local receiver was very good. However, the Receiver has No audio output, at all – nothing. The S-Meter deflected properly as I tuned while listening across the band. Searching on-line for any possible solutions, I found a YouTube Video called “KENWOOD TS-440S, NO RX AUDIO REPAIR” by “DX RADIO SHOP”. It appears he had the same issue, and found a bad capacitor on a circuit board. Whether or not this is the problem that this TS-440S has, I do not know. But it is a possibility the new owner may want to check into. This TS-440S/AT does not appear to have the “dots” issue, which require removal of some of the special cement in a few of the coils. I cycled the front-panel MHz switch through all frequency ranges, and the display indicated correctly. Like most Kenwood products, both the Instruction Manual and the Service Manual is available for free on-line download, if you’d like more information. This TS-440S/AT has the optional Automatic Antenna Tuner installed and two – optional receive filters for Narrow CW (model # YK88C) and Narrow SSB model # YK88SN. Also included is a DC Power Cable, hand microphone but no manual, mobile mounting bracket or other accessories. Many Repeater Controllers support the Kenwood TS-440 as a Remotely-controlled Transceiver. I have a Kenwood TS-440SAT connected to a UHF Repeater at my home, and that allows me to walk around with a hand-held UHF radio and work HF on any band, voice mode, and frequency. I’ve used a TS-440 with an ACC SM-100 “ShackMaster” controller which allows one or two VHF/UHF radios or a full-duplex Repeater to remotely control the TS-440. It also allows remote control via Telephone. I’ll be listing one of these SM-100 ShackMasters in a separate listing, since I have a spare unit.
