I almost do not know where to start with the history on this radio. Owned by N1EU from new in 2003 till April of 2015. Barry was a Beta tester for Ten Tec and was instrumental in supplying input for firmware revisions. He also is one of the first if not the first to really push the Orion’s Diversity reception capabilities. He placed top 10 in many contests over the years from 2003 till sale date of the radio. RX-366 sub receiver information from Barry. He was the ONLY beta tester of the RX-366 receiver. The filters are stock in the main except the 1000 hz filter has been updated to the Inrad #762 unit. See Rob Sherwood’s site for the improvement this provides. In Barry’s notes on the radio which I photographed you will note that with this filter you then do not want the 500hz or 250hz filters. Adding them would actually degrade IMD performance. Sherwood did not place this radio on his scale No doubt due to it not being totally “factory” but reading his notes you will get an Idea of how high up the list this unit would place. Had Ten Tec offered the Inrad filter as a factory option then we could place it on the list much higher up than the current Orion position. In the sub receiver you will find the stock 2.4 Khz filter and the optional 600hz filter as well. Setting up the Sub receiver for both SSB and CW operation. This Orion also has the latest Firmware V3 and has all the V2 updates done so the sweep function works correctly. This radio was also modified with the VE7TK method of bringing the 9 MHZ IF out to the spare phono jack on the back panel of the radio. This offers simple panadapter set up options with a upconverter/ dongle or a SDRPLAY or LP PAN unit. See his website or youtube video for more information on that. It does use a clifton labs buffer amp so there is no degradation of signal in the Orion to pull out the IF signal to the panadapter. The radio is a 565 not a 565at. So does not have the ATU installed. If your run and amp and outboard High Power rated tuner you know why it was set up that way. If you do not use an outboard tuner you would need to add that. Electrically the radio is 100%, Visually the rig is very nice. Back Left rear corner shows a slight push in right on the corner not really a dent but slight deformity. It also on the top has what looks like a spill mark but trying to clean it does nothing with anything I have tried. Not sure what it is or WHAT caused it. It depends on the light angle, from some angles you cannot see it and from other it is there. Pictures I took if you look close you might pick it out but it is difficult to photograph. Original manual included as well as printed documents on all the updates and additions to the radio: RX-366 documents and notes: Orion V3 Manual Addendum and user manual: 9MHZ IF out Mod manual. Stock 1KHZ roofing filter has been replaced with an Inrad #762 filter. This is the optimal setup for CW. Do not install 500Hz or 250Hz filters in the Orion 565 – That will result in inferior IMD performance. The stock sub-receiver has been replaced by the high performance RX-366 sub-receiver. Sub-receiver filter slot F3 has 600Hz filter and F2 has 2400Hz filter with slot F1 Empty and available. Note that whenever the firmware is flashed in the future, you will be prompted as to whether the RX-366 is installed and you need to say YES. The V2 Logic mod has been installed to allow the SWEEP to function with the V2 and later firmware. After consulting with the Ten Tec factory several years back the 33-ohm series resistors at the headphone jack were shunted with 18-ohm resistors to increase the maximum audio output level. All of the electrolytic capacitors on the A9 power distribution board have been recently (April 2014) replaced with new premium long-life, low-ESR capacitors. See Ten Tec wiki for details. The back up battery was replaced a few years back. See Ten Tec wiki for details on that as well. The silver conductive grease fix was applied to ensure proper RIT function and prevent intermittent operation that is almost always experienced as the Orion 565 ages. For more information see Ten Tec wiki on that update/mod. Output has been added per the VE7TK instuctions, using a Clifton Labs Z10000B buffer board. The output is available on the “SPARE” RCA jack on the rear panel, bottom right. The very latest Orion firmware has been installed. An important part of Ten Tec’s performance history and development.
