The principal one, is the requirement to take it out of line, if a different band/frequency is to be used. The second, and maybe the most significant, is changing bands, and forgetting that the filter is still in line. Depending on the radio, this situation has the potential to cause serious problems, maybe even damage to the filter or radio or both? DO NOT use a transceiver Auto Tuner into any bandpass filter, a risk of high current and/or high-voltage will damage the filter. CAUTION: Do not transmit on another band, other than the one that is listed on the filter! This can potentially damage both the radio and the filter! Consider using our PROTEKTOR Band Pass filter By-Pass product, in-order to conveniently take the filter out of line, without having to disconnect coax cables and filter. We have searched to no avail, for a low-cost/reasonably priced product, that would permit a filter to be switched out of line when not in use? We found nothing at any price, which solves this problem! Thus the BPF-200 with by-pass was created; eliminating all the above problems. BPF-200 with By-Pass System Includes. A [3′] control cable from the remote by-pass switch, to the Band Pass filter; with an LED indicator to show when the filter is in-line. VSWR & POWER CONSIDERATIONS. Hi VSWR will generate damaging RF voltages, and currents in a bandpass filter. VSWR is a reality that we have to be attentive to; and Tactical radio gear has made every effort to protect the filter components from these potentially damaging forces. These designs are over-engineered, with vigilant consideration to component selection. No expense was spared to insure the reliability and performance of our filters. The weak-link in most Bandpass filters; at these power levels, in a high VSWR condition, are the capacitors. Tactical Radio Gear, uses High-Frequency, High-Power, High-Voltage, Silver Mica capacitors; ideal for use where multilayer ceramic caps are not recommended because of cracking. The natural mica dielectric retains it’s extremely high-Q to many megahertz; and is free from thermal cracking. Silver Mica capacitors are Ideal for tuned L/C Circuits & High RF current. All the inductors in our filters are wound with the largest possible gauge wire, consistent with sensible design practices. Depending on the band, the toroid cores when used, are selected for the largest gauge wire, and minimum turns, to minimize IR losses/heating.
