This is a relatively simple, reliable, rugged, small HF transceiver. It can be used as a desktop radio but is small and light enough for field or mobile use. It weighs just over 10 lbs and is 9.5″ X 3.7″ X 7. This is a spare radio for me that is operational (as of December 19). I THINK is was manufactured in September, 1996 and is in very good condition considering its age. These radios were built as early as 1993 and there are lots still in operation. This unit is standard in that it does not have the high stability TCXO or optional filters and no antenna tuner. It is a good basic radio though. I can supply a decent Yaesu hand mic (pictured) and the operator’s manual and the technical supplement too along with a very good, heavy power cable. You just need a 13.8 VDC power supply and the antenna(s). There are lots of reviews and information on the online forums about the FT-840.
